Sony also have these optical wonders WITH very very high build quality, but of course you know the rest. This comment section is amazing. So much salt thrown towards all these Sony fanbois ragging on about their A Where are they?

All I see are people ragging on them. Oh it must be the strawman again in the stupid brand wars that nobody cares about who buys these cams. You need to look a bit more carefully at the posts I think. Must not forget the A also which has a mention. Sony are essentially a manufacturer of truly excellent sensors but can lack a bit of finesse in putting cameras around them, making lens for them and in aps-c have ceased to develop any lenses for years.

It must be said Sony users do tend to pop up a lot more than other users in other forums and other brand reviews extolling the perfection of their chosen brand and the lamentable quality of the other brand.

At the heart of it the RX that replaced the need for any other camera. Say no more. Sony APS-C cameras are excellent, in most respects. But with no new small stabilized lenses appearing, I am now buying elsewhere. No 4k. No Optical sensor stabilization. Very few STM lenses. No thanks.

I'm a huge Canon fan boy, but haven't seen anything special out of Canon since the 5D Mark 2. You expect to get OSS at this price? The a has OSS and is three times the price of this camera. The M is destined to just attach the 22 prime, set to Auto and forget about the camera. It's essential anyway because Auto takes PS tweaking away from me contrast down all the way for me on these Canons!

Like they say if it ain't broke don't fix it. If your Coolpix A isn't limiting you in a way that makes it hard to get the images you want, why get a new camera? That said, the Coolpix is still a fantastic camera.

Face Detection is surprisingly good on it. I have the Coolpix 'A' which is amazingly sharp, has a nice menu and no probs. I never tried the GR but they are comparable, the GR having more features. Assembly quality on the 'A' is fantastic. I keep it in a plastic bag as they are supposed to be prone to dust getting in the lens. But - I think the jpgs are better with Canon I just like everything else more about Nikon. The EOS M original is a pain to use because of how slow everything is to operate.

Very interested in M But after seeing the test scene, i really hope that JPEG engine in canon M will be improved, via firmware update if it's possible. Resolution both are pretty close, just different "digital sharpening looks". People seem to like it though in reallife pictures! All in all don't pick between an a vs M for an IQ difference, it's pretty negligible trust me.

I wish it can be available as a body only purchase. I already own many EF-M lenses including the kit lens. I had been eyeing this camera as a more portable replacement for my M5, but then I picked up a used Fuji XS as my main mirrorless option.

Now I'm debating whether there is a place for this camera in my gear bag. I'm not a huge fan of that kit lens. The A is such a deal because it's older, it's a higher-end camera versus the M, quite a bit higher. Problem is this is also reflected on the glass price. Canon STM glass line up is SO much cheaper and higher quality while for an A while the body costs the same, a usable kit will be as 3x as much higher price.

Didn't even get into a sharp tele or a good macro! The A was built to be an inexpensive yet high-performing camera. The high point of the Sony line-up came way back with the NEX-7, which was finally upgraded in terms of materials and build quality as the premier of the line, by the A, only last year. It seems to me the a is a much more comparable camera touch screen and no EVF than the a As an a shooter former Canon shooter it seems to me the M is a pretty decent camera and should help keep Canon users in the brand.

Moreover, enthusiasts can shoot with smaller, lighter systems regardless of brand, rather than hauling a giant heavy DSLR may help preserve the hobby. Make no mistake. The A does not have the same IQ as the A I learnt this at my expense. And is visible on the studio scene comparison tool. The a is a little smaller than the a The a with a lens doesnt fit well into a jacket pocket.

I wish Sony or Canon would make a lighter smaller camera like the a but with better IQ. You don't need all those functions in a small camera. Maybe Leica needs to make a small apsc m mount camera. My point was that under the skin, the A and A are pretty much the same.

So the tests would produce similar results. A also is quite a bit slower in burst, which has implications for HDR etc. It may take better pictures than a smartphone but the problem is, it's another thing to carry with you. For a woman carrying a purse, no problem. But I only have 2 pockets. I'm already hauling a wallet, keys, iPhone and headphones around my neck everywhere I go. What's more important, convenience or taking a quality photo?

I'd give up photography if all I had was a smartphone. But if you dont have the pockets then just carry a phone. I'll give you a hint, I don't do it on a casual, daily basis.

If you feel the need to carry a camera with you wherever you go, more power to you. But I don't have extreme urges to document every person, building or sky on my way to work.

It all depends on who you are and what's your passion. I never know when I need it. I carry an RX that I've had for over 5 years. It's taken some great photos because it's always with me. Both the camera in a belt pouch and my iPhone sit side by side on my belt.

The only photos I take with the phone are for sending to my wife when she want's to see what a product looks like before I buy it.

For any real photography I use the RX Like the people who sa y they wouldn't buy a certain camera because they think it's ugly? Some of the best photos I've kept weren't taken with a camera. Must be indicative of the poor overall quality of ICL entry level cameras. HeyItsJoel depends on the school, and the difficulty of the exam. It's easy to move the average C to any score you like.

Not good. Next thing you know a car with an 6lt engine will almost always be faster than a Fiat ! The EOS M5 is far too expensive. I think I'll stick with my EOS M or upgrade to a small Sony mirorrless for landscapes with a manual wide angle lens, but again it has to be at least a A7 FullFrame to see reasonable improvements.

I already had the A and A which were at pixel lever a bit better but not enough to convice me to change the system and both pencake lenses hat serious problems thats why I returned both.

Canon STM lenses have lovely quality, don't have this extreme problems and are cheap. Better AF, better image quality, simpler manual control, touch-screen That's worth something, especially because the small apertures of most EF-M lenses force you to jack up the ISO more quickly than one would hope. Do I need everything the M touchscreen has?

That's not enough development in 5 years. How about an external flash on the M? How about bracketing mode? Most everything else about the camera are about cost-benefit choices Canon made, rather than about "development. M is the direct successor to M Both are clearly more down-market than the original M or M2.

Canon apparently believes not enough people want a tiny EVF-less mirrorless with mid-class features and build. They're probably right, although as a former M2 owner I'm also a bit bitter about it.

Maybe the sensor is technically improved but in the real world examples I don't see a whole other world of difference ; The M10 and M are made for girls :D Look at the advertisement ; Do not have anything against girls. I could simply buy the M6 right : But it isn't that nice small I have the original M. I don't use it much because I find the controls very finicky but I have hung onto it. IMO the big improvements M vs.

M are the better design of controls, improved sensor lowest cost model with this sensor? Biggest downside? Lack of a hot shoe is not great but the M10 set that precedent. A body only option at a competitive price would make it a great second camera, especially if you already have EF M lenses and adaptors.

Yeah I like the muted effect, bit like using kodachrome in winter if you remember film that is. Guess there is something to go on in RAW for the M series and I admit I can rarely be bothered these days and just adjust jpegs, when our new media compresses images anyway.

It sounds like you are trying really hard that your older camera is just as good as the newer model so you can feel good about not spending money on an upgrade. The M is the better camera. Just admit it and move on. Have to wonder how this compares as a zoom camera using something like the cannon STM to a Micro four thirds Cam with a similar sized zoom. Seems like that cannon lens might be rather competitive with anything from Olympus or Lumix. Take advantage of the battery and OVF. You don't mean the 1 inch sensor cams will have better IQ within the Cannon's equivalent mm range do you?

Or simply that the 1 inch cam have range in the mm range? The Oly and Panny are both shorter, lighter, and in the case of the Oly, much cheaper. The Panasonic Leica , if it ever gets released, will likely be heavier and much more expensive. The Panasonic is closest in terms of price, and reach, and still able to save g on size and an inch in length. Alias, great and practical advice.

With these two cams its obviously a really close call. It seems to be such because for zoom use, Fuji and Sony mirror-less set-ups are simply too heavy in comparison- looks like the Fuji and Sony zooms are just too big and heavy. One last question if I may. If you were to give one of these two cams a a Christmas gift for a first time novice do you agree with what Dpr wrote that the Cannon's touch interface would be rather easier to learn- even if with less direct controls than the Panny GX?

Thanks a lot! One gets a GX for himself :. Whether or not the M or the GX make a good gift for your audience depends on what that person is looking for. The M is nearly as portable, but outside of a short zoom, a long zoom, and a prime, has very few options in terms of native lenses. If your audience won't ever buy new lenses, something like an RX iii set to auto might be a better option - equivalent IQ to either the Panny or the Canon with kit lens, in a much smaller package.

On the other hand, if you're buying this for someone who's just starting out, the Olympus E-M10 offers a much more "pro" look with its SLR styling - or, in silver, more "hipster. That is quite a difference for many types of shots. But will your audience care to switch lenses? If not, then maybe the Panasonic ZS might be a better option - mm equivalent lens on a 1" sensor.

If your audience wants the long lens and is willing to change lenses, the Olympus E-M10, Panny GX85, or EOS M5 might be better options - I hate trying to compose at longer than mm with a rear screen alone.

The 18 mp to 24 mp upgrade is barely noticeable. Autofocus is already fast as anything. Touch-to-focus is already great. Rest of features same, nothing particularly stands out. That sensor upgrade is all what the M is about. The DPAF 24mp chip upgrade along with the few designs tweaks make up for an enormously more competitive camera, you have to try it yourself to get the "modern" aspect of it. It's a worthy enough upgrade that Canon made it faster than their history of life cycling.

I agree with ShlomoGoldwasser I can not see any improvements. It's like a upscaled image to the bigger 24MP count with the cheaper lenses at least.

More dynamic range? I know how to build my own color DNG profiles. I switched to Sony years ago for mirrorless and sensor technology. Canon now has that great technology. Only thing Sony has better is battery. At the end of the day they are just tools. I can give advice because I have more knowledge across the brands. You give knowledge based only on one brand. MilcMan You should probably stick with the Sony group where people will believe you cause you use the brand.

Canon guys will not take you serious cause you have no experience with Canon. All I see is you spreading your hate and making it hard for people to have conversations.

I got R5 On friday and it has blew my mind. I moved from R which was a bad camera slow, bad usability, bad low light iq, missed features. I tried also R6 and realized it is great but with flaws for example sticky button like in 6Dm2 probably due to plastic-plastic rest friction and realized I cannot zoom at all due to 20mpix. R5 is perfect, marvellous camera with all wishes fulfilled and more.

I cannot believe it knows what i think and IQ is just stellar; in bright and low light. I like thise due to film-like character, lenses, usability and feeling. If you get a gfx you would probably be further mind blown. I have had a lot of Canon gear earlier, I added gear list. EOS R was horrible and slow. Last canon that I liked before R5 that was 70D. I always will have Canon's and Fujis at the same time.

Those cannot be straightly fully compared because at least I use those to different purposes and feelings. The R5 sometimes 'freezes'. The camera stops working for seconds. The EVF freezes, then goes dead. There is a clunking noise and either the camera restarts or requires the battery to be removed. This has been widely reported by many users with adapted EF lenses but, crucially, also by some using native RF lenses. I saw people showing you reports of Sony cameras freezing. For some it was a real problem.

And how many times have you posted your arbitrary numbers here? Sure looks like trolling. I don't think it takes a statistician to figure out that the referenced survey doesn't have a large enough sample size to be taken seriously. It would only take a few logins to skew the results.

Do you have a login? Nothing to shoot? You bored and miserable? Going to a Canon thread and badmouthing it while you have never used it or never will use it shows you are a troll. You have tons of comments badmouthing the R5. The R5 and R6 despite their higher prices are really making an impact. No surprise.

Canon has been growing steadily and Sony declining steadily. Sony is seeing a steady decline. First we saw they are losing money in their quarterly report, not we see they are rapidly selling few cameras and losing market share. Dpreview says ''Impressive, though not class-leading, dynamic range when using mechanical shutter'',this is NOT true Noise reduction?

Who gives concern about that, whats the point? I look at the final result image, and its sharp, clean as the other brands from this class! I think Nikon and Sony fan boys just can't handle the reality that Canon R5 is beast of a camera, amazing dynamic range, amazing color science i think one of Canon's best,Auto focus,IBIS,45 mpx Shadow recovery to my eyes watching Exposure Latitude Scene is the same, and the Dynamic range it is more than D by very little.

But we are spliting hairs I have downloaded the RAW files from Iso invariance scene and R5 at 6 stops is alot cleaner than d Dpreview does not show the reality in their online Iso invariance scene, because they are applying level of brigtness to match cameras difference in the exposure So go download booth Raw files, open them in camera raw and you will see that i am right : Every camera is different at iso,it has difference in the exposure Is higher better or worse??

Jan Itor Since you know so much, can you explain the graph I'm referring to? The D's graph line falls between the R5 and the RP, so it higher or lower better in the graph?

Jan Itor seems that you have no information regard new R5 sensor Good luck! The reason why this camera is so great is because it more useful than other cameras and is the best or near the best for almost everything. Other cameras are limited and often one trick ponies.

So its great for landscapes, but poor for video, action and handheld long exposures. So great for sports, but poor for video, landscapes, handheld long exposures, or anything that needs the highest DR. I've seen it said the R5 is future proof. It has arguably the best eye and head detect AF and animal eye AF. And no doubt that will improve with FW updates. It has 8K RAW video too. It has class leading IBIS.

I would personally choose the S1H over the R5 if looking for a hybrid. I would need reliable video at HQ and full size HDMI port, and dual cards that allow simultaneous video recording to both cards. R5 is a poor choice for video creators like myself. There are plenty of great cameras out there; we are spoilt for choice. One very unique aspect of this camera is that it is the first MILC to combine high resolution with such great and high speed AF. Then add in some of the higher quality video modes and you have something even more unique.

Sure, the higher quality video modes have some limitations but at least they are still there, and for those who want short clips there are no problems. The R5 has established itself in the mirrorless world right now as the most complete all-around camera. Then there are the fabulous RF lenses which are other reason to own the system. I read many factories are switch from 4K to 8K panels for anything over 65 inches.

And soon the discount brands like TCL will start selling them, This should bring the price down. Canon was a pioneer of electronic, multi-mode cameras, and some of the design decisions that the company made way back in the s persist even now, in its high-end EF and RF cameras.
