Important: Yojimbo 4. You must be using Yojimbo 3. See above for details on upgrading to Yojimbo 4. The latest version of Yojimbo for iPad is always available from the App Store.
Important: TextWrangler 5. TextWrangler is not however compatible with macOS If "Preserve file name extension" is turned on, the snapshot's name will be foo.
You can now use an Emacs variable to control whether or not a given file is backed up. There are two ways to do this:. If the first letter of the variable's value is "y", "t", or "1", the value is "yes", otherwise it's "no". These are all synonymous:. It really only makes sense to specify backup-inhibited: 1 , since otherwise the file would be backed up if the global pref is on, and not otherwise.
If a symbol lookup in a Python file fails, and it appears to be a method of a class, we'll try to look up the class. This command will tell your web browser to open our support contact form. The toggle editor button in the action bar at the bottom of the file list can also be used for this purpose.
When hiding the embedded editor, the associated document will be removed from the window and closed, after prompting you, if it was not open elsewhere. Because of this potential need for user interaction, you cannot collape the editing view entirely by dragging the view splitter; you must use the button, menu command or in the case of results browsers, a double click on the view splitter.
Option-clicking the close widget in the windows palette will close all windows. This matches the same conceptual change made to the documents drawer list, as well as the standard behavior for option-clicking the close widget in the titlebar of windows. Methods defined with it should be listed in the function popup. Yay, metaprogramming. The items in the "Saved Search Sets" source group for multi-file searches now have an "X" widget; clicking the X deletes the search set after confirmation.
Items in the "Recent Folders" group in the multi-file search sources list now have an "X" widget; clicking the X will delete the recent item from the list without disturbing the folder that it refers to. They work pretty much as one would expect.
This is similar to the STYLE entry for stylesheets: functions and objects added to the function popup as a result of the script tag are indented beneath the script tag's entry, to suggest containment. There are new Find and Multi-file Search windows; where they overlap, they provide a consistent and modeless interface to TextWrangler's legendary text search and replace capabilities. If you're familiar with the old Find dialog, you'll generally feel at home, but there are some important differences and additions of which you should be aware:.
The Find dialog has been split in two, with one window for searching only the front document, and one window for searching more than one document including folders, arbitrary open documents, and so forth. The fairly confusing collection of options to configure which text actually gets searched for single-file searches has been condensed down to a single pair of "Search in:" options: "Selected text only" and "Wrap around". Keyboard navigation is radically different as it must be, given the new windows' modeless nature.
It's not possible to use the command-key equivalents from the old modal Find dialog for toggling items in the Find window, because those equivalents collide with factory keyboard equivalents or system standards for different menu commands.
So there's a new group of keyboard equivalents for controlling Find and Multi-File Search window items. In the Multi-file Search window, you can use the keyboard when the search sources list has focus, as follows:. Delete removes the selected items from the list after confirmation, and only if they're eligible as indicated by the "X" widget.
Image windows update their content when the backing file changes, making things like developing POVRay scripts a little bit easier. For compatibility with scripts written for pre Note that this transformation does not operate in the reverse direction; if you get the text encoding property and explicitly compare the name, you will need to update your script. It will move the current document or selected documents when invoked from the documents drawer into a new editing window removing them from their current editing window.
There is an additional command "Open in Additional Window" which will open the current document or selected documents when invoked from the documents drawer in an additional window that can be edited side by side with the original document. Attempting to bring up a contextual menu in the "dead" space at the bottom of a disk browser list now works, presenting you with "globally" available commands New Folder and New Text Document.
The application automatically saves its state open documents and windows once per minute, so if something bad happens to your machine, there's a pretty good chance that the next time you start up, things will be as they were when the event occurred. For refugees from Windows who are used to having Tab indent a line or selected range of lines , there's a new preference in Editing: Keyboard: "Allow Tab key to indent text blocks. There's a new color setting in the Text Colors preferences: "Predefined names".
The color may be changed on a per-language basis in the Languages preferences: double-click on the language's name in the list and examine the Colors tab in the resulting sheet. If a BBLMPredefinedNameFileName key appears in the module's property list, it is a string which names a text file in the module's Resources bundle directory; the file contains one predefined name per line. In the Languages prefs, the options sheet for Python now has a tab for Python-specific options, in which you can choose the color to use for decorators.
You can now review and apply sub-line differences individually in the results of Find Differences. New command on the Search menu: "Replace to End". This command provides the pre The internal FTP implementation has been rewritten to improve performance and reliability.
Users with dual or more core machines may notice additional performance benefits. The "Passive" setting for FTP is no longer used. When transferring, TextWrangler will first attempt a passive connection; if the server does not support passive transfers, BBEdit will then attempt a non-passive PORT connection.
Our recommendation is that you disable per host in preference to globally or per-domain, but at the end of the day, do whatever works. The file filtering interface supports a new term: "File Path". This is a simple string match against a given file's full path. This makes it an ideal tool for composition, clerical tasks, system administration or software development.
Recent additions include the ability to edit in browsers, a new non-modal Find and Multi-File Search windows, and much more. Commercial licensing terms are available for companies who wish to add value to their products by including TextWrangler in the product distribution.
BBEdit offers professionals and passionate hobbyists even more power, from the advanced HTML and CSS tools to seamless integration with version control systems, code folding, text completion, Projects, a Scratchpad, Text Factory, Clipping sets and much more. Tsehov Dec 11 By far the best text editor for mac user. I use it in editing html, css, php and text files, and it is very capable for all of them.
It is surprising TextWrangler is free. As a scatter-brained developer who is ALWAYS working on more projects than he ought to, and in turn always worrying he'll lose some chunk of code, if the relevant file isn't staring him in the face, only TextWrangler can stand up to my habits.
I doubt that number has dipped below in over 6 months, but I haven't lost a single sentence, despite frequently neglecting to save or name files for several months on end, plus a dozen power failures from a dying battery. Yet, after diligently restoring every file's state upon start-up, TextWrangler handles each task no differently than if I had only 1 or 2 open documents excepting multi-file searches, obviously :.
Did I mention some files are routinely 10's of MBs in size? I could go on. Seriously, if anything you do typically involves a monospace font, you SHOULD at least have tried TextWrangler -- and I'd be surprised if it hasn't earned a place in your workflow!
Chrischram Oct 29 Does anyone know? Masterminter Oct 22 Awesome html editor! About the best and free. FireMuffin Sep 2 Wonderful text editor, still supports Snow Leopard, and free. Shodan Mar 4 I've been using jEdit for years and have been wondering whether trying another editor was worth the time investment. Erik-Carlson Jan 29 Wow like BBedit light Penguirl Oct 11 I am no coder by any means, but when I do need a plain text editor TextWrangler is what I turn to.
My lazy, sloppy hosts file worked just fine in No more Facebook, etc… Yay! Thank you Bare Bones! DirkTheMenace Aug 19 Fantastic editor. Remarkably for free too!!
Jjpong Jun 6 I like TextWrangler a lot especially after Apple, Inc. What bothers me, though, is that TextWrangler always opens a new document sheet with the maximum height possible. Every time I create a document sheet, I have to adjust its height, which costs me 2 seconds or more.
Toad Jun 5 Why is it that when I start the last three versions of TextWrangler it opens all files in the last directory I edited a file in? I keep reverting to 3. Unicorn May 27 I use this because Text edit native mac text app doesn't appear the same to windows users.
I have to save the text as formatted for windows. Sometimes I may even get a broken text file, and this helps with the different language codes you can open it with. M-Rick Apr 26 Reverted to version 4.
Kripton Apr 4 This app app is a must. It can open every file, even the bigger ones. It's easy to write any kind of code with it. C, PHP, etc. Caleb-Gilbert Mar 23 I don't know what happened to 4.
Emale Feb 22 Using it for work. TextWrangler always does what I need. And there are not many other text editors that are able to directly edit files from FTP-Servers. That's a big benefit for me. Shk Feb 22 Toad Feb 21 First class, and has been for many years.
Whisperquiet Feb 21 Yet another 'must have' piece of software. For text editing or editing of css, java and html, Text Wrangler is my 'go-to'. Offering colour coded text and a great 'find and replace'. And its Free! Tony Feb 9 I keep all my text files on an encrypted partition, and I have setup TextWrangler to automatically open up all text files which were opened in last session, however, if I load TextWrangler and my encrypted partition was not active, TextWrangler opens up blank pages, and then if I close TextWrangler and unencrypt my text partition, TextWrangler should automatically open all text files which were originally opened, but it doesn't.
Any FIX? Tareed Dec 14 I have used plain text editors extensively for many years, but I've never found one that I liked better than TextWrangler. It's extremely powerful.
One thing I frequently do with it is use the grep-based find and replace to massage data from an awkward form such as copied from a table on a web site into something more useable like tab-delimited data fit for import into a database or spreadsheet.
Guest Aug 1 Regular-Warren May 17 If you're looking for a text editor, you can't go wrong with TextWrangler.
Orion-Mk-V May 17 Oh, and the price is hard to beat. Makosuke May 10 After upgrading to TextWrangler 4. This is on two separate systems, too. This was never a problem with previous versions of TextWrangler, and files owned by anything else use the custom icon correctly including the same files that TextWrangler fails on--switch an HTML doc to Expresso, for example, and it shows the Espresso icon.
I've gone through the basics for the issue; re-did the "Open with" and applied to all, repaired permissions, rebooted, redownloaded and replaced the application with a fresh copy. Nobody else is reporting this, but I'm seeing it on two different computers. Is there something obvious I'm missing? Lesoth0 May 2 Bares Bones' software has always been the dog's bollocks but this is fabulous. Uniquepito Apr 15 Please implement support of highlighting same words in the opened file.
